A delegation from the Industrial Engineering Branch visits the General Company for Heavy Engineering Equipment

Under the supervision and guidance of the Head of the Production Engineering and Metallurgy Department , Prof. Dr. Mona Khudair Abbas A delegation from the Industrial Engineering Branch visited the General Company for Heavy Engineering Equipment, located at the site of the Dora Refinery Complex, one of the companies of the Ministry of Oil. The Industrial Engineering Branch was represented by the head of the branch, Dr. Amjad Barzan Abdel Ghafour, accompanied by the Head of the Metallurgical Engineering Branch, Prof. Dr. Ali Mazhar Rasan and a number of the branch’s teachers and third-year students in it to see the reality of the on-site work and the capabilities of the engineering industrial companies, as this company has worked since its establishment in 1963 in the field of manufacturing oil and industrial equipment and has developed during this period by adding new factories and products. The company has expertise in manufacturing pressure vessels, steam boilers, heat exchangers, refinery towers, tanks of all types and capacities, and steel structures. Where these equipments are major and important parts of various industrial processes in the oil and gas sector, industry, electricity, roads and bridges. The company adopts design and production according to the international standards API, ASME, TEMA. It includes several factories, namely the heavy equipment factory, the boiler factory, the containers and tanks factory, the exchanger factory, the generator factory, in addition to the supporting departments. It is worth noting that most of the engineering owners working in the company are graduates of the Production Engineering and Metallurgy Department at the University of Technology.

The head of the Department of Production and Metallurgy Engineering and my instructor from the Northern Technical University receive a patent

The Head of the Production Engineering and Metallurgy Department, Dr. Mona Khudair Abbas, with the participation of a teacher at the Northern Technical University / Technical College - Kirkuk, Prof. Jawdat Ali Yaqoub received a patent on (Improving the corrosion resistance and bioactivity of the medical alloy cobalt-chromium-molybdenum by adding nanoparticles of zirconia stabilized yttria in Rinker’s solution) due to the increasing use of the alloy based on cobalt-chromium-molybdenum (CoCrMo) in medical applications such as prosthetics As artificial knee joints, manufacture of shoulder bone replacements and supporting structures for heart valves, and supplies for stabilizing and supporting bone fractures. The alloy has also been used in industrial applications such as bearings, engine components and turbines. This study is devoted to the manufacture of this base alloy and composite materials of the base alloy (CoCrMo) reinforced with nanoparticles of yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) in different weight ratios and by powder metallurgy method. The results showed that the corrosion resistance of the base alloy (CoCrMo) was greatly improved when few percentages of nanoparticles (YSZ) were added, respectively, in Rinker's solution. The addition of these particles also improved the antibacterial activity of the alloy against Staphylococcus aureus bacteria.
